Fri May 15, 2009 John Prine at the Beacon Theater, New York City, NY with special guest Justin Townes Earle. Back up band: Dave Jacques: electric and upright bass, backing vocals; Jason Wilber: guitars & mandolin, backing vocals

Prine was in prime form at the Beacon back in mid may, 2009. He did not disappoint. We made the trip down from Toronto for a few days of r and r but specifically to see the master songwriter work his magic in a beautiful setting. Angel from Montgomery, Sam Stone and all the classics sounded like they did back in the '70's when he was just making a name for himself. Its great to see so many young fans into Prine. It proves that youth may not be wasted on the young... keep on strumming....

"Prine was backed only by two other musicians variously adding electric guitar, mandolin, and bass fiddle. At times, he appeared solo with only his acoustic guitar. Yet he proved that his simple approach can be suitable for so grand a venue as The Beacon Theater without the assistance of any elaborate performance tricks. His achingly direct delivery, propelled by the power of a heart filled with genuine emotion, to me, was enough to fill the room."

Opening for John Prine was Justin Townes Earle, son of Steve Earle. He has a rousing entertaining act with an awesome mandolin and harmonica player ' Cory". These 'hillbillies' knew how to work a crowd! John Prine came on and it was heaven from that point on. He did many great tunes but the set list seemed very similar to the last show we saw in Florida a while back. Come on John, with SO many great songs, mix it up a little will ya! The audience loved him and I was happy to be in a room full of people who appreciate this gem of American music. We see JP ANY chance we can and will travel overnight if needed. His songs and humorous stories are so real and endearing I am happy for many weeks after a show just remembering the sweet evening.

I have been a John Prine fan since 1971. Over the years I have seen him many times. I had front row ochestra seats for this show. ALL I can say is I could have listened to him for another 2 hours. GO JOHN GO.................
