Maybe it's always Prine time -  The
      Register-Guard
"You can't really categorize a genius as big as John
      Prine's." That's what rollingstone.com says, anyway. But that doesn't
stop the whole world from trying.
Prine won a Grammy in 1991 for best contemporary folk
album with "The Missing Years." But he's equally at home in the
      rock and country worlds.
Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty joined him on
"Missing Years," and Emmylou Harris and Trisha Yearwood loaned
their vocals to 1999's "In Spite of Ourselves." He made a movie
      - "Falling From Grace" - with John Mellencamp.
He even put out a rockabilly album, 1979's "Pink
Cadillac," recorded at the famed Sun Studios by the label's founder,
Sam Phillips, and his son Knox.
Versatility and John Prine go hand-in-hand. So Eugene fans of
literate rock- and country-tinged folk music have something to get excited
about. Their guy will perform at the McDonald Theatre on Wednesday.
And no, he's not pushing a new album. His most recent release
was the 2001 DVD of "John Prine: Live From Sessions at West
54th," which stemmed from the PBS series of the same name.
The fan Web site John Prine Shrine (jpshrine.org) reports
that a new album is in the works for March 2005. But after nearly 30 years
as a critically acclaimed singer-songwriter and 17 albums, he most likely
will have plenty of material to keep the fans entertained.
Prine picked up the guitar at age 14, and as a young man
became a fixture on the Chicago folk scene of the late 1960s. According to
a record label bio, Prine's best friend managed to get Kris Kristofferson
to come see Prine perform one night.
That fateful event helped Prine land a major label record
deal. Prine later was able to return the favor. Kristofferson now records
on Oh Boy Records, the label Prine founded in the 1980s.
Prine has come to see his songs covered by a wide variety of
artists, from Bette Midler and Bonnie Raitt to Tammy Wynette and Johnny
      Cash.
"It's a great feeling when you put something in a song
and other people say that's exactly how they feel," Prine said in the
biography distributed by his record label. "That's the most
gratifying thing about songwriting for me.
"It's always been a real outlet for me - being able to
      put those feelings down."

I've been very fortunate to have seen John live many times. I went to
this show with some friends that had never seen John perform live. Of
course I told them how great it would be....blah,blah,blah.. I guess I had
fallen into that smug or complacent mode where I felt that I couldn't be
surprised, no matter how good it gets....Well I'll be the first to admit
that I was WRONG! I don't know if this was the best show that I've ever
seen but it sure feels like it. I can't seem to pry this smile off my face
      !
