Hadn't heard it in years. Don't look for soft romance here. Bitter and hurt but a great album full of truths. Best line "Christ I'm so mixed and lonesome, I can't even make friends with my brain." If you like German Afternoons then best avoided, if you want to listen to one of the great albums, then buy it, open a few beer and dim the lights. You're in for one hell of a ride.

It starts w/ a Jesus one, and it ends w/ a Jesus one --- and halfway through he says what a lot of people who think they are "holy" in Christ's' eyes probably need to hear... "..some folks they wait and some folks they 'pray' for "Jesus" to rise up again.... but none of these folks in their "holy cloaks" ever took Billy on as a friend--" J.P. may or may not believe Jesus was who he said He was, but he offers a perspective in these and others that is leagues above and beyond what I've heard a lot of Ministers, Priests, and swarthy pastors say combined...

This has got to be one of the most underestimated and underenjoyed albums of all time. This album was recorded in two months for only $2700. The songs on this record may show a side that most people don't want to reflect on. That doesn't mean that you shouldn't from time to time. People made such a hubbub when debut came out that they flew on the debut carpet during the next ten years and simply ignored other, perhaps better Prine music. I'm looking at this as objectively as I can, as I wasn't alive in 1971. I've only known Prine for 5 years. But I own everything that Prine has put out, and it will remain that way. I love this album. Sit alone in a dark room and let yourself ponder all of the bad things that have happened in your life. The listen to some of John's bad things. Maybe you'll cry. Or smile. Or both. Listen to it again for the first time.

Diamonds in the Rough by John Prine is one of those records that you never really notice 'til its gone. From the opening "Everybody," Prine takes you on an emotional trip thru rural Kentucky circa the Vietnam war. "The Torch Singer" ---hell, I've seen her. Slightly off-key, never was attractive, but never gave up trying to be, "she sang of the love that left her and the woman that she'll never be." The hallmark of the album, a somber yet light tune w/ Steve Goodman, "Souvenirs" stands out as possibly the best song JP ever wrote. The allegorical, "The Great Compromise" tells the story of John and a Girl (America) as she cheats on him (Vietnam) and the shame and disappointment he felt about the war. "Yes I guess they Oughta Name a Drink After You"---I knew her, too. "Diamonds in the Rough", a tent revival, sacred harp singing, gospel tune done acapella w/ Steve Goodman and his brother is just rough enough to sound like mountain music, but tight enough to make the al! bum. All and all, one of his best. dB
